HOW IT WORKS

Sign in. Pick a preset. Read the tape.

TapeRank is one list of 25 tickers, re-ranked every 5 seconds by what is trading right now. This page walks through what you will see on screen, what each part means, and what the app will never pretend to know.

01 · PICK A PRESET

Start with a preset. Tune it later, or never.

The first thing the app asks is the only thing it asks: which slice of the tape do you want to watch. Three built-in presets, or the whole tape. Every threshold in them is yours to change afterwards.

Low float gappers

Small, thin, and moving. The tickers that run hardest and give the least warning before they stop.

Large cap flow

Liquid tickers carrying unusual volume. Slower moves, but you can get size off without moving the print.

Halt watch

Everything volatile enough to trip a circuit breaker, plus every ticker currently halted.

The whole tape

Everything liquid enough to trade, ranked by what is trading. The widest view, and the one that always has tickers on it.

Each card tells you how many tickers clear it right now, so you never pick a preset and land on an empty screen. And when a preset is narrow, the list is honestly short: if six tickers clear it you see six tickers, and the app tells you what to loosen. Nothing is padded to look busy.

02 · READ THE LIST

Ranked by what is trading now. Not by what happened this morning.

Rank is activity: how much a ticker is trading at this minute compared with what it normally does at this time of day. Nothing that ranks a ticker looks back more than 15 minutes, so a stock that gapped at 07:00 and went quiet by 09:45 is not still sitting at the top at 14:00. Pre-market is measured against pre-market, so a ticker at 06:30 is judged against its own 06:30, not against the whole day.

#
Rank. Ordered by how much the ticker is trading right now, and nothing else.
TICKER
The symbol, bright when it is running and dimming as it cools.
LAST · DAY · 5 MIN
The price, the move on the day, and the move in the last five minutes.
RVOL
Volume against what this ticker normally does at this time of day.
SETUP
The read on the chart: gap and go, opening-range break, VWAP reclaim, fading, and so on.
5M $VOL
Dollars traded in the last five minutes.
FLOAT
Shares outstanding, marked as a proxy on every row.
AI VERDICT
Whether a public filing explains the move. One of four answers, with a confidence.

Only tickers liquid enough to actually trade make the list. The setup and the execution read beside a row are there to tell you what you are looking at; they never change the order.

03 · WATCH IT COOL

Tickers that go quiet fade. Nobody has to drop them.

Every row is SURGING, ACTIVE or COOLING, and you can see which without reading a number: the heat bar, the brightness of the ticker and the warmth of the row all fall together as a ticker stops trading, so the list visibly cools from top to bottom. A ticker that has cooled past the point of being worth watching leaves on its own. There is no rule anywhere that says "drop old tickers"; going quiet is what removes them.

The shadow line

A labeled hairline between the tickers still running and the ones cooling off. It glides with the ranking as the tape changes, and when nothing on your screen is cooling, it is not drawn at all.

Nothing blinks out

Once a ticker is on the list it stays until it has cooled off. Rows dim and slide down; they do not vanish while still bright, so you always see the fade before the exit.

04 · ASK WHY

"Why is it moving?" gets an answer, not a shrug.

Every ranked ticker carries a committed AI verdict on whether public SEC filings explain its move: one of four answers, a two-sentence summary, a one-line reason, and a confidence from 1 to 5. The model reads what the filing says, not just that one exists.

JUSTIFIED

There is a concrete catalyst, and the size of the move is in line with it.

STRETCHED

There is a catalyst, but the move is far larger than the news supports.

UNEXPLAINED

Nothing filed accounts for it. That is a finding, not a blank: the move is being driven by order flow.

DILUTION RISK

Recent financing was filed into the move, so holders face share issuance.

A verdict that hedges, gives advice or rambles is never shown. The row says PENDING instead, because a hedge dressed up as an answer is worse than no answer. A ticker with no filings at all gets a plain rule-based verdict, and the app labels it as one.

Three things the verdict does not do. It does not see headlines that were never filed with the SEC, so an UNEXPLAINED verdict can mean "we cannot see it" as well as "there is nothing". It does not refresh on a timer: it is re-asked when a new filing lands or the move changes character. And it does not predict anything. It weighs the size of the news against the size of the move, and that is all.

05 · OPEN THE ROW

Click a ticker. The whole story is one pane.

The verdict with its reasoning and the time it was made, so a pre-market read is never mistaken for a current one. The filings it was read from, linked to the source. The setups in force, each with the level that triggered it. Whether you could get a fill right now: OK, thin, or costly. The session's own levels, and a chart. All of it as of the same instant as the list.

06 · PIN IT AND WALK AWAY

Pin what you care about. Three alerts, only three.

Pin a ticker and it is hoisted above the list, keeps its true rank, and never fades off. Pins live on the server, so an alert on a pinned ticker reaches you with every tab closed.

A ticker enters the top 10

Something new is running. The one alert that is about the list rather than your pins.

A pinned ticker halts or resumes

With the halt code, the price it froze at, and the exchange's published resumption time.

A fresh verdict lands on a pin

A new filing changed the answer to "why is it moving". You hear about it the moment it does.

As toasts in the app or as push notifications on your phone. No digests, no marketing. The free plan includes up to 10 pins; Pro raises that to 50 and turns alerts on.

WHEN A TICKER HALTS

A halted ticker loses nothing.

Halts come straight from the exchange. A halted ticker holds its rank and stops cooling; the row shows the halt code, the price it froze at and the published resumption time, and its verdict card stays exactly where it was. When it resumes, it is marked as resumed so you know the tape is fresh.

STRAIGHT ANSWERS

What it shows, what it does not, and what it is not.

How far behind the tape am I?

Pro is real-time. The free plan is the same ranking, 15 minutes later: the same list, never a different one. The delay you are looking at is always in the app's header.

What TapeRank does not show yet

A few things are not in the app today, and none of them are faked. Short interest is not shown and is not estimated. Quoted spread is not shown; the column is usually an em dash, and execution is judged from what is measured. Float is shares outstanding. True free float is not available, so every float figure is marked as a proxy and a filter on float is a filter on that. Halt proximity is conservative: for large caps, "how close to a halt" can be understated, never overstated. The rule behind all of these is the same: unknown is not zero, and nothing is invented. An empty cell is an honest cell.

Is this investment advice?

No. TapeRank is a screening tool. It does not recommend buying or selling anything, it routes no orders, it holds no positions and it manages no money. The verdicts are model output with a stated confidence and they can be wrong. Read the disclaimer before you use the list for anything.
